Second in Sony Ericsson's triumvirate of handsets announced today, the W555 brings fashion, gesture control, glossy gold and black to 2008. In typical Sony Ericsson clamshell style the handset is on the largish side, offers nice big keys for all your phone work, a decent and bright internal screen coupled with a nice external OLED jobbie. Follow the link to see some pics of the two colors we found on display.

Hands on with the Sony Ericsson W350

Also on the table at Sony Ericsson's booth is the new ultra-light flip, the W350i. We've covered the important tech bits on this thing already and we were pretty stoked about its slim svelte look, but sadly, this fella still needs some tweaks to make it just right. We wanted to get at least a couple pics of the user interface, but it wasn't cooperating with us at all, any attempt to get the handset's demo rolling ended up in complete video madness. We can overlook software glitches as the handset isn't close to hitting retail, but this phone's flip is cheap, and I mean real floppy cheap. When in the closed position the flip doesn't actually seat -- we saw this on two different handsets -- nor does it have an I-will-last-a-long-time feel. Those points aside -- and it may be those issues go away before it hits retail in the second half of this year -- we're really digging the look of this set.

It's not quite as technologically interesting as the N95 8GB for North America, but bright, pretty colors can certainly sell as many phones as a good chunk of internal ROM can. We spotted an in-your-face red N95 at the Nokia booth of Digital Experience this evening, and guess what? It's not custom painted, it's not some sort of funky special edition -- it's real, it's coming, and more importantly, it's coming here. Word on the street we'll see it before the first quarter's out for $599, implying that there's a little price drop for N95s of all colors in the cards for the near future.

Sony Ericsson appears to have taken a page clear out of Nokia's book with the Z555, a fashionable flip (subject to personal opinions, of course) that looks like a hinged homage to Espoo's Prism series. The innards aren't much to talk about -- the GSM comes in one of two triband flavors depending on your region, and there's nary a hint of 3G to be found -- but the draw here is something Sony Ericsson's calling Gesture Control, which allows you to control a handful of phone functions (ringtone mute and alarm snooze are specifically called out) by waving your hand in close proximity to the handset. You also get a hidden external OLED display, 1.3 megapixel cam, stereo Bluetooth, and pretty much all the colorful rectangles you can handle. Look for both regional versions of the phone to launch by the end of this quarter.

We're awfully disillusioned by the lack of 3G data -- a phone with a display, a keypad, and an overall look this sexy deserves better. Be that as it may, though, anyone who thinks they can plod along happily on EDGE alone owes it to themselves to have a nice, close look at the ROKR E8 when it comes out later this quarter. The landscape QVGA screen was awfully bright and crisp (though the eerie, dim blue lighting plaguing the room could make it seem artificially great), the glossy black shell is pretty gorgeous, and it's hard to deny the cool factor on a mighty morphin' keypad. Complaints? The usual 3G whining aside, we'd have preferred a full circle for music navigation instead of the funky three-quarter thing we have here. Call us fickle!

The Z8 is so 2007, and we're ready for something new to satisfy our insatiable banana phone needs. Technically this form factor is called a "kick slider," yes, we understand that, but who wouldn't rather own and use a banana phone? Anyway, the Z10 is a marvelously attractive phone, owing largely to a tastefully metallic casing that's reminiscent of the platinum V3xx (and we mean that in a complimentary way). Our time with the phone was all too brief, but we got the impression that the Z10's implementation of UIQ -- like the Z8's before it -- is an awesome implementation of Symbian that could easily give S60 a run for its money if only Motorola would take the time and R&D dollars to proliferate these kinds of phones a little bit more than they do. Sadly, the Z10 features HSDPA only on the 2100MHz band, and we got absolutely no impression from Team Moto that there'd be any Americanized version on the way. Lucky you, Europe!

Sony Ericsson W350 Handset

Sony Ericsson banged out three new sets today, and one that immediately caught our eye with its Ericsson T39-esque -- with a dash of Z700 -- styled flip. The W350i features a 1.3 megapixel shooter, FM Radio, Bluetooth, 14 MB of internal memory plus a 512 MB Memory Stick Micro, and ships in either Electric black, Ice blue, Hypnotic black, or Graphic white -- we'll let you guess which is which. We can expect a W350a variant, which will include 850 MHz GSM in place of the 900 MHz in the W350i version, so the odds of this landing on our shores looks good. The music controls parked outside the flip are a pretty sweet idea, we're liking what they did with this design and hope that it continues to impress once we get some hands-on time. Of course, if we were forced to nitpick, we might whisper something like: where's the 3G fellas? Handsets are expected to hit retail channels in Q2 2008 though no word on pricing.

Hands on with the Sony Ericsson W760

Of Sony Ericsson's three handsets launches today, the Walkman-branded W760 holds the most promise of landing over here thanks to its healthy dose of HSDPA in all the flavors we love. This slider is definitely well put together and felt rather hefty -- in an altogether pleasant way -- while we played with it during our brief visit this afternoon, though we could definitely find some room for improvement for the keys on the front. Nothing mind blowing, but we like the addition of GPS, the slider keypad is top notch, and being able to control the preloaded racing game by just rocking the phone, well, rawked. We're hoping we'll have some provider news in the near future, but until then, enjoy the gallery.

Vodaphones 2008 lineup!
Just a day before the start of the CES in Las Vegas, Vodafone has leaked out her entire portfolio for 2008. Unknown Nokias, HPs, BlackBerrys and Palms see daylight.
Tomorrow the Consumer Electronics Show will take place in the American Las Vegas, an event that the main manufacturers like to use in order to launch some new devices. Just before the CES is about to start, the employees of The Boy Genius Report have managed to get their hands on Vodafone's portfolio. This portfolio consists out of a lot of devices, from BlackBerry to Nokia, that are not announced yet. Besides the leaking out of the device themselvers, the specifications of the devices also leaked out, with which a clear view of all new things for 2008 is received.
Nokia E71
With the codename "Nokia Laim", the Nokia E71 will be placed in the business section of the market. The Nokia E71 is the follower of the Nokia E61i and has been in the news a couple of times recently. The Nokia E71 has a more stylish and discrete appearance than the earlier Nokia E-series had, the device has namely received a black designed outside.

Nokia E71
The Nokia E71 is a quad-band device with UMTS and HSDPA support with which dataconnections are up to its fastest. Besides this, the Nokia E71 will also offer WiFi support, with which wireless networks can also be reached. The full QWERTY keyboard makes sure that messages and e-mails can be typed in a fast way.
With their E71, Nokia has clearly thought about multimedia, relaxation and handy options. The candybar operates on the Symbian system amd with this it can be synchronized with the computer very easily. The Nokia E71 has two cameras; at the front a simple VGA camera can be found the enables the user to make videocalls, at the back we find a good 3.2 megapixel camera for real photos. Information about the amount of internal memory is not available yet, but it is known that it is expandable up to eight gigabyte with MicroSD memorycards. For those who find it hard to navigate their way through the traffic, Nokia has made sure that the E71 can help. An integrated GPS receiver was teh result of this and in combination with maps that can be downloaded the user will be able to find his way everywhere.
The Nokia E71 will come to the market at the second quarter in combination with Vodafone, if the candybar will arrive in the shops earlier without Vodafone brand is not clear yet.
Nokia E66
With the codename "Nokia Dora", the Nokia E66 will soon be announced. The Nokia E66 is, we cannot expect otherwise, the follower of the Nokia E65. The Nokia E66 will be a semi-business slider, just as her follower, but of course it has received some changes. The leaked image material clearly shows that the Nokia E66 has lost some weight and millimeters, but the functions have not become any less.

Nokia E66
Just as the Nokia E71, the quad-band will offer UMTS and HSDPA support. Furthermore, the slider also has two cameras, the front naturally is a VGA camera for videocalling and the camera at the back is a 3.2 megapixel camera. The amount of memory the Nokia E66 offers is not know yet, we do know that it is expandable with MicroSD and TransFlash memorycards. Dataconnections can also be made with help of the WiFi support.
Those who cannot find their way will be able to use the GPS receiver and download Nokia navigation maps. The Nokia E66 will probably find its way to the telecomshops at the second quarter. It will have a salesprice of about 375.00 euro.
Palm Panda
The follower of the Palm Treo 500v will also end up in the Vodafone portfolio. This candybar is now only known with the name Panda, the product name of the device is not known yet. The first improvement in comparison to the Palm Treo 500 is the system on which the triple-band candybar will operate, this namely is the unannounced Windows Mobile 6.1 system. Concerning appearance, the Palm Panda has not changed a lot.

Palm Panda
On the area of dataconnections, the Palm Panda has become a little faster. The device namely offers more than just UMTS support as the Palm Treo 500 does, it also offers HSDPA support. The camera that is placed at the back has remained the same, this namely is a 2 megapixel camera. An extra addition is that the Palm Panda has received a GPS receiver.
Information about the amount of memory that the device will offer is not available yet, as is information about the standby time and talk time of the device. Nevertheless, it is known that the Palm Panda will reach the shops round September for a salesprice of about 240.00 euro.
Palm Drucker
Another unknown device in the Vodafone portfolio is the Palm Drucker. We do not have any image material of this device yet but we do know some specifications of it. The Palm Drucker will probably be a candybar device that also operates on the Windows Mobile 6.1 system. The device has UMTS, HSDPA and WiFi support and will be a super phone concerning data speeds. Just as with the other current Palm devices, the Palm Drucker will offer a 2 megapixel camera. Furthermore, a GPS receiver and QWERTY keyboard is present.
The Palm Drucker will enter the market round July and will have a salesprice of about 365.00 euro.
HP Silver
The HP SIilver will become a new candybar with a delightful keyboard. The keyboard that is used in the HP Silver is namely produced by RIM, mother company of the well-known BlackBerry devices. This candybar of HP now has the codename Silver, the device will receive its real product name later. The keyboard can be named a half QWERTY keyboard, something that is also used in the BlackBerry Pearl. Every key represents two characters in this case.

HP Silver
Very conspicuous with the HP Silver is that the device is one of the first mobile phones that offers a data speed of 7.2 Mbit, something that is realized by the UMTS and HSDPA support. The HP Silver operates on the Windows Mobile 6 system and also offers WiFi support. GPS support is also on board of the candybar, as far as we know now the device will not have a camera.
The HP Silver will arrive in the shops round July for a salesprice of 335.00 euro.
HP Oak
Next in line is the HP Oak, a very special device for HP standards because the device is a QWERTY slider. Of course, HP launched full QWERTY devices earlier but a slider has never reached HP's portfolio. The HP Oak also offers WiFi, UMTS and HSDPA support, the latter realizes a speed of 7.2 Mbit. The large display that is used in the HP Oak is an LCD touchscreen that is very clear.

HP Oak
The photo clearly shows the touch ring that is also used in the other HP iPaq devices that were launched recently. As far as we know, the HP Oak does not offer a camera to make some snapshots on the way. Information about the standby time and the talk time of the HP Oak is also available, which will be 360 hours and 210 minutes. A GPS receiver is also on board of the HP Oak.
The HP Oak will reach the shops at September 2008, the salesprice will be about 350.00 euro.
BlackBerry 8110
The BlackBerry 8110 will be, as the name could already reveal, the follower of the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl. The BlackBerry 8100 Pearl turned out to be a successful device, especially for the female business user that wants to use the BlackBerry capacities but does not like the size of a full BlackBerry. The BlackBerry 8110 will not entirily be focussed on the business user but more on the messaging lover.
The BlackBerry 8110 has exactly the same appearance as the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl does and, of course, the ergonomic trackball is still there. The memory of the BlackBerry 8110 will probably be 64 MB with the possibility to expand this with MicroSD and TransFlash memorycards. The biggest change that has been made in the quad-band device is a GPS receiver as an extra function, with which the user can go anywhere without getting lost.

BlackBerry 8110
Further specifications of the BlackBerry 8110 have remained the same when compared to its predecessor. The candybar still offers a 2 megapicel camera and musicplayer and will also offer a mini USB port and bluetooth. The talk time is 210 minutes and the standby time is 360 hours.
The salesprice of the BlackBerry 8110 is not known yet, it is known that the device will end up in the shops very soon, the Vodafone information states that this will already take place in January.
BlackBerry 8xxx
An unknown BlackBerry device of which the first photo leaked out at the beginning of this week was first mentioned as a start of the BlackBerry 9000 series. It now turns out that this BlackBerry is a new addition to the 8000 series. The round shapes of the BlackBerry 8xxx, as we still name the device because it has not received an official productname yet, make the device look a little slimmer and this will appeal to the female user. The quad-band candybar with full QWERTY keyboard will offer WiFi, UMTS and HSDPA support with a speed up to 3.6 Mbit.

BlackBerry 8xxx
The processor that is used in this new BlackBerry device will be a 624 Mhz processor and is very powerful. Furthermore, the 1500 mAh battery will offer enough power in order to stay standby for days and for making countless calls. However, the exact talktime and standbytime is not known yet. Just as the BlackBerry 8800, the BlackBerry 8100 and the BlackBerry 8110, this device will also have a GPS receiver. A 2 megapixel camera is placed at the back of the candybar for some relaxation.
The BlackBerry 8xxx will reach the market round May, the salesprice is not available yet. Naturally, the European providers will still have to accept the device at this time and add it to their own portfolio, but because Vodafone England has already done this the trip to other countries will not be that far.
What can we expect?
The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas will start tomorrow, a big event at which many telecom brands launch new devices. If the Vodafone portfolio will see daylight in Las Vegas tomorrow with the presentation of the seperate brands is unknown. The brands could also decide to show their new portfolio to the world at the Mobile World Congress, this namely is the biggest telecom event of the year, an event at which the media eyes are focussed on even more when it comes to the introduction of new devices.

Samsung F490 and P720 confirmed
02-01-2008: Last week, a pair of Samsung devices leaked out at a pressmeeting in the Uktraine, today the Korean manufacturer confirmed that the Samsung F490 and the Samsung P720 will also come to Europe.
Just before the end of 2007, two unknown Samsungs leaked out at a press meeting in Ukraine. Mobile Phone Helpdesk wanted to know more about the devices and contacted Samsung, questioning them about the availability of this pair on European grounds. Erwin van de Valk, spokesman of Samsung, confirmed the devices and also indicated that Europe will embrace the Samsung F490 and the Samsung P720. More information about the devices was something he could not give because the Samsung F490 and the Samsung P720 are not officially announced yet.

Besides a cinfirmation of the devices coming to Europe, Mobile Phone Helpdesk is also able to present you with more live photos of the Samsung F490 and the Samsung P720 in full glory. Several specifications were already mentioned earlier and both devices promise to be new bestsellers in 2008.
Samsung F490
Samsung will not only come with new sliders or clamshells this year, the Samsung F490 namely is a touch sensitive candybar that will do good on European soil. The Samsung F490 is the follower of the Samsung F700 and will offer a 5 megapixel camera as biggest difference between these two. Furthermore, the display is also adjusted in size and this resulted in a 262.000 colours touchscreen of 3.2 inches in size and a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.
Just as the Samsung F700, the Samsung F490 will be equipped with the so-called "Haptic Feedback" technology. This enables the candybar to tremble lightly when a function is chosen and this gives the user a feeling of acknowledgement.
More details, for example about the standy time and talk time or the internal memory, is not available yet.
Samsung P720
Not a lot has changed in comparison with the Samsung P520 Armani. However, it is possible to use the Samsung P720 in combination with two simcards. This will probably result in the Samsung P720 being placed in the DUOS section of the Korean manufacturer. Because it is possible to use two simcards with the device, the creditcard phone has nog exactly lost some weight.

Which nametag the Samsung P720 will exactly get is not clear for now. If the device will be named Samsung P720 Armani of Samsung P720 DUOS will become clear at the moment Samsung will officially launch the devices. This will probably take place at the Mobile World Congress in February, an event that is held in Barcelona.

Of course, Mobile Phone Helpdesk will alse attend this event in order to examine everything new, under which the Samsung F490 and P720.
